Why him!!?

Few will disagree with the fact that last season Mahrez, Vardy and Kante where the three most important players for the EPL champions Leicester city.

Those three wowed the premier league with their performances, showcasing their different qualities. Vardy with his speed, dangerous movement and eye for goal.

Mahrez’s flair, incredible dribbling ability, chameleon like eyes for passing and also possessing a knack for scoring YouTube worthy goals. Then there is

Kante, the heartbeat of that Leicester team with his incredible tenacity, ability to drive forward with the ball from deep, one of the best ball winners I’ve ever watched. Claudio Ranieri once said that all that was left for Kante to do was play a corner and still be the one to head it in. He wasn’t the usual defensive midfielder, he had the license to find spaces he could exploit, he had both defensive and offensive duties. Throughout the just concluded transfer season, the three Leicester players where the subject of various transfer talks and rumors, as well as actual bids, from the big boys. At the end, Leicester where able to retain just two of their priced jewels. Kante was the one who was let go. Now the question is, are you happy Kante left? if not, who would you have rather seen leave instead?

Being able to retain two of your three best players is pretty impressive for a small club like Leicester who has the eyes of every big team on the planet on them after the fairy tale season they experienced. To me, Kante was the one I wouldn’t have let go. What if they had just lost what made them special? what if Kante was that thing that took them from an average mid table team to contenders? At times last season, it was as if N’Golo Kante was an extra presence on the pitch, so much energy all over field. When he played during the Euros he looked more impressive than Pogba (maybe because he played in a deeper role). Kanteis the difference between relegation fighting Leicester and Epl winning Leicester. I don’t know how they can replace that, despite all their signings this season, Slimani, Ahmed Musa, Zieler and co. All good buys but none really stands out to me. They could yet surprise us again though, few thought much of Kante when he was signed by Leicester, August 2015.

Leicester still has hard work and talent littered all over their current team, but in order to match their last season level, some one has to step up to fill that Kante role, new signing Nampalys Mendy maybe or Danny Drinkwater has to work twice as hard. Luckily Mahrez and Vardy are looking good. Few believe they’ll be able to match last season, with Kante I felt they had a chance. Right now I’m not so sure. The reason I feel Kante shouldn’t have been sold is because he could prove to be harder to replace than a Mahrez or Vardy, and selling to Chelsea, a title contender might mean that Leicester does not see itself challenging this season. Let’s watch and see.
