The Football Gods Have Found Paris

PSG spent years chasing greatness through star power. They found it in the collective.

I think PSG are still underrated, in some ways at least. Part of it is that they play in Ligue 1, so every achievement comes with a little ‘eeeh, farmers league, they get to rest.’ What makes that funny is that it’s the same excuse critics used when PSG kept falling short in Europe: ‘They have it so easy in France, they can’t switch it up when the Champions League comes around.’

So which is it? The league was too easy when they lost, and now it’s too easy when they win? Pick one.

I’ll admit I pushed the farmers league line myself. I’m an Arsenal fan; banter comes with the badge, and maybe there’s a little truth in it. But who are we to complain? We get to watch this team. It’s god-level entertainment, footy porn, skill on par with sorcery. Every time they get the ball, you can feel something is about to happen. And then it does.

I keep thinking this is what our parents saw when they watched those Brazil teams of yesteryear. Those sides didn’t just beat you. They made you feel like you’d witnessed something you couldn’t explain to anyone who wasn’t there. That first half against City was the closest I’ve come to that feeling. It wasn’t just good football. It looked like what Amadioha and co are playing up there, or at least what they think they’re playing. I’m not joking.

Luis Enrique deserves his flowers for this. He inherited a club that had spent years collecting stars and winning at home without ever quite becoming a team, and he got them playing like one mind. Everyone presses, everyone moves, and nobody gets to coast because of who they are. Lose the ball and they hunt it together. Win it back and everyone seems to know where to be.

Then in 2025 they won the Champions League, and they didn’t scrape it. They put five past Inter in the final. Farmers league, yeah?

The great teams all touched the same realm. Brazil touched it. Cruyff touched it. Guardiola touched it. I believe Enrique has touched it too. That place where football stops looking like eleven players following instructions and starts feeling almost instinctive. He may never get the ‘godfather of a philosophy’ treatment those two get, but you don’t need the label when you can see it every time they play.

And there’s something fitting about it happening at PSG. After all those years of chasing greatness through star power, they found it in the collective.

So enjoy it, even if you support another team. Especially if you do. Teams like this don’t come around often, and one day we’ll be telling our kids we watched it live.

Take the argument with you.
